Episode 6: the shock wave
Dustin runs through the Upside Down lab to rejoin Nancy and Jonathan. He crosses paths with Steve and explains what Brenner's notes say: the Upside Down is a wormhole between the real world and another dimension, the wall is a confinement field, and the sphere above the lab is made of exotic matter that holds it all together. Too late: hit by Nancy, the sphere emits a shock wave that throws Nancy and Jonathan into the building and cracks the wall. Chunks of the Upside Down are sucked into the void. Hopper, Eleven and Kali cross back to Hawkins through a gate, thanks to Eleven's powers.

Nancy and Jonathan
The lab melts and traps Nancy and Jonathan. Steve wants to rush in; Dustin stops him, and admits he could not stand losing another friend after Eddie. The two make up. Convinced they are going to die, Nancy and Jonathan finally look their relationship in the face: Jonathan reveals he wanted to ask her to marry him, and instead asks her not to marry him. They split by mutual agreement, because they do not want the same life. Then the melting stops, and the structure freezes: they are alive.

Will in Henry's lair
In Hawkins, Will does not wake; Mike, Lucas and Robin try to understand. Robin guesses that he saw Max and Holly in Henry's mind, and that Max could get back to her body if she escapes. Will, for his part, wakes in Henry's lair, bound by tendrils: Henry reveals that he already used him to dig the tunnels under the town in 1984, and that he plans to use him again to locate Max. Eleven, Hopper and Kali find Mike and Joyce on the radio; Eleven confides to Mike her fear that killing Henry will not be enough, since his blood is in her. Through Will, Henry locates Max's body at the hospital, just before Eleven reaches her; Will wakes to warn: Henry wants to kill Max.
The cave, and the briefcase
In their cave, Holly refuses Henry's proposal to abandon Max and come back to him. Max has exhausted her searches; Holly insists on exploring farther, and they discover a mine, a childhood memory of Henry's: a wounded man, a briefcase, Henry killing him and opening it. It is the origin of everything, which the finale will explain.
The explosion of KarenAt the hospital, Vickie blames Robin for the stolen meds, the army arrives, Robin is arrested; then demodogs burst into the building, and Robin and Vickie run to warn Lucas. Cornered in the laundry room, they are saved by Karen, who blows up oxygen tanks in a dryer.
The portals
Max and Holly finally find the portals that lead to their bodies. Max tells Holly she will have to find her own emotional tether to get out, draw on her courage, and hide in the Wheelers' house in the Upside Down until someone comes for her. They hug and each run their own way. Max's waking opens the next episode.

Behind the scenes: the scene the Duffers worked on most
The script is by Kate Trefry. It is her first episode written for the show, but not her first contribution: she had worked on the story of the last chapter of Season 1. Direction goes to Shawn Levy, executive producer from the start, of whom Ross Duffer said “the performances make us cry every time we watch.”
Nancy and Jonathan's breakup is, according to the Duffers, the scene they spent the second-most time on in the whole season. Matt Duffer talks of a “trauma bond”: they love each other, but have to let each other go so each can grow on their own side. The end of their story had been decided “for a while.” Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer were praised by the creators for that scene.
Shawn Levy recounts having read the synopsis of that "anti-proposal" in a melting room, and having told himself that the director tasked with shooting it would have "one hell of a headache." Fate had it that it was him: six to eight months of prep, among engineering, special effects and research, so that the danger of the room would recede and leave all the room for the emotion.
What Dustin understands about the Upside Down
The episode finally gives an explanation. According to Brenner's notes, the Upside Down is a wormhole between the real world and another dimension. The wall that encircles Hawkins is a confinement field, and the sphere above the lab is made of exotic matter that holds the whole thing. When Nancy shoots it, the shock wave breaches the wall and whole sections of the Upside Down are sucked into the void.
Those three elements, wormhole, containment, exotic matter, are the pieces of the final plan. Dustin will use them in “The Bridge” to propose blowing up the exotic matter and destroying the Upside Down for good. The dialogue of that episode, technical in appearance, is in reality the instruction manual of the ending of the show.
The episode also contains an important line from Eleven to Mike: she fears that killing Henry will not be enough, because his blood is still in her. The sentence prepares her choice in the last chapter.
