The July 4, 1985 fair

The town brought the rides out for the holiday. Light, crowd, sugar, noise. It is the most public set of the summer, after the pool and the mall. People come to win a prize, not to hide. That is exactly why the death there is unbearable: nobody closed the park.

The seventh episode of the season, original title The Bite, keeps this fair. The season summary places it before the battle, the same July 4. The fair is not an interlude. It is the last joyful place of the day.

The map of Hawkins already has the mall and the woods. The fair, for its part, is temporary: rides that one puts up and takes down. The story does not make a building of it. It makes a night of it.

  1. The summer A base under the mall

The Soviets have a machine under Starcourt. Alexei is one of its scientists.

  2. The escape The group takes him

Hopper and Joyce take him from the Hess farm. Grigori tracks them across the town.

  3. At Murray's A house, then the fair

The escape goes through Murray, in Illinois. It ends in the crowd of July 4.

  4. The booth Darts and a plush

Alexei wins a prize. A giant Woody Woodpecker, at the dart game.

  5. The shot Grigori fires

A bullet, in the middle of the rides. Alexei dies there.

  6. The night The mall

The same evening, the battle plays out under the signs, not at the fair.

Alexei, Murray, the booth

Alexei is the scientist taken from the Hess farm. He does not speak the town's language, he likes sugar, and he behaves, for the length of a booth, like someone who has finally been given a day. He pops balloons at the darts. The plush, a giant Woody Woodpecker, he has just won it. The story lingers on this prize because it is everything he will own.

Murray is the go-between of this escape: the house, the translation, the idea that a civilian can still hold a conversation with a hunted man. The group did not come to the fair to have fun. Alexei, for his part, did, for the space of a game. This gap is the scene.

One does not lend him a political speech. One lends him darts and a plush prize. That is crueler than a speech. The July 4 carnival is for that: showing a man on vacation in the middle of a war he has already lost.

The chase through the crowd

Grigori does not find the fair by chance. He has been tracking the group since Hopper and Joyce took Alexei, and he loses their trail at a gas station. It is Mayor Kline, ordered to draw them to the fair, who spots them there and calls him. The article on Grigori follows this henchman. Here, one keeps the place. A fair is the worst place to lose someone who does not run and who does not stop.

The crowd covers everyone, the killer too. One slips between the rides, and Grigori fires with a silencer, covered by the noise. The story chooses this silence. It does not make Alexei a fugitive who gets away in an alley. It makes him die where families are waiting in line.

The context of this hunt, the machine, the men under the mall, is in the article on the Russians. The fair does not explain the Cold War. It shows its price, on a single body.

Alexei's death

Grigori shoots him down with one bullet. Alexei still clutches the plush in his arms. It is the most unjust death of the season, in the simplest sense: not a fight, not a creature, a man who fires on a man who had just won a prize.

The police chief is in this hunt. The duel that will follow, in the gears of the machine, owes something to this bullet. Without it, the night does not have the same debt. With it, the fair is over before the last rides.

I do not describe a house of mirrors plan by plan: the sources used for this article fix the gunshot, the booth, and the crowd, not an attraction route. The murder is enough. It is public, quick, and without a comeback line.

The fires of July 4 and the battle

The same date also carries the end of the season. The season 3 summary lines up the fair, then the battle at the mall. Starcourt, in this season 3, is the place of the machine and of the final fire. The fair has already taken Alexei. The mall takes the rest of the night.

July 4 is a fireworks day. The story uses it as a frame, not as a pyrotechnic manual that I would detail beyond the sources. What is sure is the single date: the plush and the battle belong to the same evening.

Grigori, for his part, continues after the booth. He will end up in the gears, thrown by Hopper. That ending is no longer the fair. It only explains why the carnival bullet was not going to stay without a sequel.

Why the scene stays

The show has other deaths that are more spectacular. This one is small, and that is why it marks. A stranger, a sugar, a prize, a crowd that did not consent to become a firing range. One understands the underground war better here than in a speech.

It also says something about Murray and Hopper: they pulled a man away from the Soviets, they did not keep him alive to the end of the day. The fair punishes the idea that an exfiltration can end in cherry ice cream.

After that night, the town no longer has this fair. The story does not set it up again the following year. It stays dated, like the pool: one summer, a July 4, a plush that served for only a minute.

One can tell it without the battle, and that would already be enough. A man, a sugar, a prize, a bullet. The rest of the night explains the war. The booth explains the price. The rides, for their part, asked for nothing.
