Who is Holly Wheeler?
Holly is the third Wheeler child, born well after Nancy and Mike, late enough for her older siblings to treat her like a pleasant piece of furniture. For four seasons, she is a presence: at the table, in Karen's arms, at the edge of a pool, a toy in her hand while the rest of the family tears itself apart. The show gives her almost no lines, and yet she is there from the first episode.
It is Holly, besides, and not Mike, who first sees something of the other world. In 1983, in the Byers house, she wanders off from the search party and enters Will's room: the lights come on, the wall breathes. She looks, without screaming. Karen carries her away. Nobody will ever ask her what she saw.
In 1987, season 5 makes her a main character. Holly has grown, she has an imaginary friend named Mr. Whatsit, a classmate who bullies her, and an imagination fed by books. That imaginary friend is not imaginary. It is Henry Creel, and he has been preparing her for months.
Mr. WhatsitThe name comes from A Wrinkle in Time, the Madeleine L'Engle novel Holly loves: Mrs Whatsit is one of the three creatures who guide the children, and Camazotz the dark planet they have to cross. Holly renames her imaginary friend and her prison with the words of her favorite book. When Karen reveals that Mr. Whatsit is actually named Henry, Nancy and Mike understand who was talking to their sister.

Holly season by season

1983The Byers wall
While the adults organize the searches for Will, Holly wanders down the Byers hallway, drawn by the lights that blink. In Will's bedroom, the wall warps before her eyes. Karen finds her and takes her away. It is the first scene on the show where a Wheeler sees the Upside Down knock at the door.
1984 - 1986The background years
Holly grows up on the edge of the plot: dinners at the Wheelers', Karen and Ted's fights, the town celebrations. The show lets her be seen without giving her lines. She is, for the viewer, the reminder that someone in that house is too small to understand what Mike and Nancy do at night.
November 1987Mr. Whatsit
Hawkins has been under military quarantine since the gates opened. Holly talks to an imaginary friend, Mr. Whatsit, who visits her and reassures her. Her parents find it amusing. Will, whose bond with Vecna has grown stronger, has visions: Henry has been hunting Holly for weeks, and already has another child in his sights, her classmate Derek Turnbow.

November 1987The kidnapping
A Demogorgon comes through the ceiling of Holly's bedroom. She runs to take refuge with Karen in the bathroom. Karen smashes a wine bottle and hits the creature, in vain: Holly is taken through a portal to the Upside Down, Karen and Ted badly wounded. Eleven chases the monster and hits an impassable wall. Holly wakes in the Creel house, welcomed by Henry.
November 1987Camazotz and Max
In the forest around the house, Holly meets Max Mayfield, a prisoner of this place since her death of a few moments in 1986. Max explains to her where they are: a world built from Henry's memories. Holly names it Camazotz. Together they explore Henry's memory to find a way out, while Derek Turnbow, abducted in turn, diverts his attention.
November 1987The exit
Henry wants the children as “perfect vessels” to reshape the world. In a cave of his memory, Max and Holly uncover a buried recollection: Henry as a child killing a man. Max tells Holly to find her own path, leaning on her courage. They split up. Holly wakes in Vecna's lair, escapes through a rift, falls through the Upside Down, and is recaptured. In the final battle, she is the one who guides the other children out of Henry's mind while Eleven faces him.
What defines her
Since 1983, Holly has been looking at what the others do not see. The show chooses her as a witness before making her a target.
She names her prison after a novel. Camazotz is her word, and Mr. Whatsit too. Imagination is her survival tool.
Max tells her to find her own path. Holly finds it, and brings the other children back with her.
Henry tries to turn her against Max. She refuses, and offers to explore farther rather than hide.

One last precision: Holly was played by twins, Anniston and Tinsley Price, through the first four seasons, then by Nell Fisher in season 5, when the character had to carry whole scenes. The change of face surprised some viewers; it simply accompanies the passage from early childhood to the age of reason.
