Who is Mike Wheeler?
The show opens on him, or almost: a suburban basement, four boys around a table, and Mike, behind his dungeon-master screen, bringing a cardboard Demogorgon into the game. Ten hours later, Will is gone, and Mike, who has never led anything but a role-playing campaign, takes charge of the search.
Mike is the son of Karen and Ted Wheeler, a middle-class Hawkins family, with a big sister, Nancy, a little sister, Holly, and a basement that becomes the headquarters of the show. He is the natural leader of the group: not the strongest, not the smartest, but the one who decides, who digs in, and who is the first to believe what the others refuse to see.
He is the one who finds Eleven in the woods, who hides her in a fort of blankets, who teaches her the word “friend” and the word “promise”. The whole show, after that, will be the story of a boy who learns to keep his.
The paladinIn their role-playing games, Mike is both the dungeon master and, when he plays, a paladin: the knight who protects the others and fights for a cause. The show never makes the parallel out loud. It simply gives him, in 1986, a painting by Will in which he leads the party in armor. That is how Will sees him. That is how he ends up seeing himself.

Mike season by season

1983Season 1: the promise
The day after Will's disappearance, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas go looking for him in the rain and find a girl with a shaved head. Mike hides her in his basement, feeds her, teaches her to talk, and promises to take her to the end-of-year dance, the Snow Ball. To save Dustin from the middle-school bullies, he jumps off a quarry cliff: Eleven catches him in midair. In the classroom, she vanishes while disintegrating the Demogorgon. Mike spends the winter calling her every evening on his walkie-talkie, with no answer.
1984Season 2: the absence
Three hundred fifty-three days of calls with no answer. Mike goes through the season in mourning, rejects Max, clings to Will as to what he has left. He is the only one who notices his friend's absences and understands that something possesses him. On the night of the battle, Eleven comes through the Byers door and Mike, furious, learns that Hopper has been hiding her for a year. He forgives her at the Snow Ball, where they finally dance.
1985Season 3: first love
Summer 1985, Mike and Eleven have been together for seven months, kiss in the cabin bedroom, and drive Hopper crazy. Threatened by him, Mike lies to Eleven, and Max teaches him how to break up. He spends the summer repairing the damage, jealous, clumsy, unable to say the words he thinks. He finally says them, in the middle of the chaos, in a shopping mall. At the end of the season, Eleven leaves for California with the Byers, and Mike stays in Hawkins.
1986Season 4: the confession
He visits Eleven in Lenora Hills, brings her flowers, and watches, powerless, as she is arrested after she hits Angela. With Will, Jonathan, and Argyle, he crosses the desert to the Nevada silo where she gets her powers back. In a pizzeria, while Eleven faces Vecna in Max's mind, Mike finally speaks: he tells her he loves her, from the first day, and those words give her the strength to push Henry back. In the van, he did not understand what Will was trying to tell him.

1987Season 5: the dungeon master
In fall 1987, Mike coordinates with Nancy the incursions into the Upside Down to find Henry. His little sister Holly is abducted; his parents are badly wounded. He discovers Will's powers and supports him, without reserve, when Will comes out. He takes part in the final battle, then watches Eleven choose to stay in the other world as it collapses. The epilogue, in May 1989, shows him become a writer. By cross-checking details nobody else has seen, he convinces himself that Kali and Eleven had a plan, and that Eleven is alive. The show leaves him the last word, and he gives it to hope.
What defines him
Three hundred fifty-three calls. A cliff. A desert crossed in a van. Mike does not give up, even when he is wrong, especially when he is wrong.
He narrates, he cuts, he assigns the roles. The group does not need a strong leader: it needs someone who decides. That is Mike.
He takes seven months to say “I love you” to Eleven, and a whole season to understand Will. His silences do as much damage as his sentences.
To Eleven, to Will, to Dustin, to Lucas. Mike is often wrong about the manner, never about the people.

Not to be confused
| People often say | In reality | The landmark |
|---|---|---|
| Mike has powers | None; he is the only one in the party who has never destroyed anything | The pizzeria: he talks, she strikes |
| Mike and Eleven end up together | The show leaves Eleven's fate open; Mike chooses to believe | The May 1989 epilogue |
| Mike rejects Will | He does not understand what Will tells him in 1986, then supports him without reserve in 1987 | The coming out of season 5 |
| Mike is Will's brother | They are best friends; Will's brother is Jonathan | The Byers family |
One last confusion: Mike is not the narrator of the show, even if he opens the first scene and closes the last. Season 5 makes him a writer, which fed the theory of a story told by him. The show never confirms it. It is content to give him the last word.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Mike in Stranger Things?
Mike Wheeler is the leader of the party: the dungeon master who starts the Dungeons & Dragons game of November 6, 1983 and who takes Eleven into his basement two days later. Brother of Nancy and Holly, Will's best friend, he goes through the five seasons without powers, but with a stubbornness that holds the group together.
Do Mike and Eleven end up together?
The show does not decide. Eleven chooses to stay in the Upside Down during its destruction, and the May 1989 epilogue does not show her. But Mike, now a writer, cross-checks details and convinces himself she survived thanks to a plan prepared with Kali. The creators wanted to leave the choice to viewers.
Why does Mike jump off the cliff in season 1?
To save Dustin: two middle-school bullies threaten him with a knife at the quarry and demand that Mike jump. He jumps. Eleven, arriving in time, catches him in midair by telekinesis and sets him back on the edge. It is the scene that seals their bond, and the one that reveals Eleven to Lucas.
What does Mike say to Eleven in the pizzeria?
That he loves her, from the first day, from the woods, and that he will always love her. He says it while she faces Vecna in Max's mind, plunged into a freezer turned into a deprivation tank. It is those words, and not a power, that let her push Henry back and save Max.
Is Mike in love with Will?
No. Will is in love with Mike, which season 4 makes explicit and which Will owns in season 5 during his coming out. Mike, for his part, loves Eleven. He does not understand what Will is trying to tell him in the van in 1986, then supports him without reserve when Will opens up to his friends in 1987.
