Eleven and Mike form the first couple of Stranger Things. Mike and Eleven, that is the first couple of the show and the last: a boy who finds a girl in the woods in 1983, and who, in 1989, refuses to believe she has vanished. Fans call it Mileven. 1983: the girl in the woods
Mike finds her in the rain, hides her in his basement, teaches her the word “friend” and gives her a name, El. He promises she will go to the Snow Ball with him. In the middle school cafeteria, he kisses her, clumsily, before the fight against the Demogorgon where she vanishes. Mike spends the following year calling her every night on a walkie-talkie, with no answer.

1984 and 1985: the reunion, then the breakup
She comes back in 1984 to close the gate, and the Snow Ball takes place: their first dance, their real kiss. The summer of 1985, they are a couple, unbearable in Hopper's eyes, who threatens Mike so he will stay away. Eleven, advised by Max, breaks up with a letter that has stayed famous: “I'm dumping you.” They make up before the battle of Starcourt; she hears him say he loves her, and she tells him at the end, before leaving for California.

1986: the distance
In Lenora Hills, Eleven hides from Mike that she is being bullied, and Mike does not know how to say what he feels: his letters end with "From," never with "I love you." Their fight over that word occupies half the season. It is Will, in the van, who explains to him what Eleven feels; and it is in a pizzeria freezer, while she is fighting Vecna in Max's mind, that Mike finally tells her, in a monologue, that he has loved her since the first day.
The monologueThe scene split people: too long for some, necessary for others. It settles, in any case, the question asked since 1983: Mike loves her, and he knows how to say it.
1987: the end
Under the quarantine, they are together, and it is Mike who coordinates with Nancy the incursions into the Upside Down while Eleven trains. In the Abyss, he sees her choose to stay on the other side while everything collapses. The epilogue, in May 1989, shows him a writer, without her. But by piecing together details nobody else has seen, he convinces himself that Kali and Eleven had a last plan, and that she is alive, somewhere. The show leaves him the last word, and he gives it to hope.
Why Mileven holds
Because the show never made Eleven Mike's prize or Mike Eleven's savior: they find each other, lose each other, say things the wrong way, and it is he, at the end, who refuses to declare her dead. A couple from the show, rather than a TV-show couple.

Why Mike did not write "I love you"
Season 4 makes that absence its through-line. Mike finally explains, in the pizzeria, what held him back: the fear that Eleven, once grown and free, would no longer need him, and that a written “I love you” would make him dependent on her. Will, in the van, had given Eleven's version: she fears not being loved for what she is, different, with her powers and her past.
That misunderstanding, two people who love each other and each think they are too much, is the couple's material for two seasons. It is resolved at the worst moment, in the middle of a battle, as often in the show: the confessions come when there is no time left to be afraid.
What the ending does with it
The finale does not give the couple a life together, but it gives them the last word. Before the bomb explodes, Eleven shares a last moment with Mike, in his mind: she tells him she loves him, asks him to thank the others and help them understand. In the spring of 1989, Mike is the one who has the hardest time turning the page; Hopper has to push him to go get his diploma.
He is also the one who formulates the theory of Kali's illusion, and who chooses to believe it. For Mileven, the ending is therefore a promise rather than a farewell, the word Mike had taught her in 1983: something you cannot break.
