Who is Joyce Byers?
On November 7, 1983, Joyce Byers bursts into the Hawkins police station to say her son did not come home. They tell her kids always come back. She does not leave. She hounds Hopper, she smokes, she yells, she picks up a phone that crackles and swears it is Will breathing in it. The whole town thinks she is crazy. She is the only one who is right.
Joyce raises her two sons, Jonathan and Will, alone in a small house on the edge of the woods. Their father, Lonnie, left, and only comes back to ask for money. She works at Melvald's, the town drugstore, for a wage that is not enough, and she does everything else: the bikes, Will's drawings on the wall, the meals, the sleepless nights.
What defines her is a refusal. She refuses the fake body at the morgue, she refuses the post-traumatic stress diagnosis, she refuses Hopper's death. Every season, a reasonable adult explains to her what she must accept, and every season Joyce takes an axe, a string of lights, or a plane to prove the opposite.
The wall of lightsIn 1983, Joyce understands that Will is blinking the lamps to answer her. She paints the alphabet on the living-room wall, strings a Christmas light strand above it, and asks a question. The bulbs light up letter by letter. The scene became the most recognizable image in the show, and the wildest gesture of a mother who, for once, was not wrong.

Joyce season by season

1983Season 1: the lights
Joyce hears Will in the phone, sees him in the wall, and talks to him through the lights while Hopper investigates. She refuses the fake body the town presents to her, and when Hopper opens the corpse with a knife, she is vindicated. Together they enter the Upside Down through the lab gate, in borrowed suits, and find Will unconscious. She brings him back. At Christmas, she watches him cough up a slug in the sink, and says nothing.
1984Season 2: Bob
A year later, Joyce is dating Bob Newby, a former high-school classmate, manager of the electronics store, gentle, funny, and the first kind man in her life. Will has episodes, and Bob helps her understand them. When Will, possessed, draws the tunnels under Hawkins, it is Bob who reads the map. In the lab overrun by the demodogs, he saves everyone and dies in front of Joyce. She exorcises Will herself, with radiators, in Hopper's cabin.

1985Season 3: the Russian gate
Summer 1985, magnets fall off the fridges at Melvald's, and Joyce wants to know why. She drags Hopper to Mr. Clarke, to a Russian scientist, Alexei, and to Murray Bauman. The four of them discover the Soviet base under the Starcourt mall, and the machine reopening the gate. On July 4, Joyce turns the two keys that destroy it, watching Hopper vanish in the explosion. Three months later, she leaves Hawkins with her sons and Eleven for California.
1986Season 4: Kamchatka
A matryoshka doll arrives in Lenora Hills, with a message signed “Enzo”: Hopper is alive. Joyce calls the number, raises forty thousand dollars, and flies to Alaska with Murray. They drug the smuggler, Yuri, crash in Siberia, force him to take them to the camp, and get Hopper out just as a Demogorgon is hunting him in an arena. She finally tells him what she feels. On the night of the battle, they burn the prison creatures, and go home.
1987Season 5: the axe
Under the military quarantine, Joyce infiltrates the army base with Hopper to free the kidnapped children. In the last chapter, when Eleven and Will have brought Henry Creel down in the Abyss, it is she who steps forward, an axe in her hand, and cuts off his head. The mother who talked to the lights brings down the monster of the show. The May 1989 epilogue shows her accepting Hopper's marriage proposal.
What defines her
The fake body, the diagnosis, Hopper's death: Joyce says no to everything she is asked to accept. She has always been right.
She paints an alphabet, ties her son down, turns two keys, knocks out a smuggler, holds an axe. Joyce delegates nothing.
She shouts, she smokes, she shakes people. The show never calms her down: it gives her the right of it.
The childhood friend who calls her crazy in 1983 and whom she goes to find in Siberia in 1986. The longest love story on the show.
Key moments
-
The phone that crackles
A breath on the receiver, and Joyce swears it is Will. She rips the phone off the wall, buys another, and waits.
-
The morgue
She looks at her son's fake body and says it is not him. The town buries him anyway. She is right.
-
The wall
The alphabet, the lights, and the bulbs that come on one by one. The most famous plan on the show.
-
The two keys
Under Starcourt, she looks at Hopper, she turns the keys. She closes the gate and believes she has killed the man she loves.
-
The axe
In the Abyss, she steps toward Henry Creel on the ground, and strikes. The monster of the show dies at a mother's hand.

Not to be confused
| People often say | In reality | The landmark |
|---|---|---|
| Joyce is Eleven's mother | She raises her from 1985 on; Hopper adopted her in 1984 | California |

A rarer confusion: Joyce is not from somewhere else. She grew up in Hawkins, knew Hopper at Hawkins High, and it is this town that made her look crazy to everyone. When she leaves it in 1985, it is the first time in her life.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Joyce in Stranger Things?
Joyce Byers is the mother of Will and Jonathan, a cashier at Melvald's in Hawkins. When Will vanishes in 1983, she is the only one who believes he is alive and talks to him through the lamps in her house. She becomes Hopper's ally in every season, until she brings down Vecna herself in 1987.
Do Joyce and Hopper end up together?
Yes. Childhood friends, allies since 1983, they circle each other for three seasons. Joyce believes he is dead at Starcourt in 1985, learns he is alive in 1986, and crosses Siberia to get him out of a Russian camp. In the May 1989 epilogue, Hopper asks her to marry him and she accepts.
Who is Bob in Stranger Things?
Bob Newby is Joyce's partner in 1984, a former high-school classmate who runs Hawkins's electronics store. Gentle and funny, he helps Will and deciphers the map of the tunnels drawn by the boy. He dies at the lab, killed by the demodogs, after saving the group.
How does Joyce kill Vecna?
With an axe blow. In the last chapter of season 5, after Eleven and Will have immobilized and pierced Henry Creel in the Abyss, Joyce steps forward and cuts off his head. It is the definitive end of Vecna, before the destruction of the Upside Down.
Why does Joyce leave Hawkins?
After the battle of Starcourt and Hopper's supposed death, in the summer of 1985, Joyce wants to protect her sons and Eleven, who has lost her powers. She sells the house and moves to Lenora Hills, California. She leaves again in 1986, first for Siberia, then for Hawkins.
