- When: December 31, 2025 and January 1, 2026
- Where: more than 600 theaters in the United States and Canada

A late announcement
The theatrical screening was announced in late October 2025, with the full trailer: the finale would be shown in theaters the same night it dropped, in theaters in the United States and Canada, for two days only. The tickets, put on sale a few weeks later, sold out in a few hours; extra screenings were added.
It was a first for the platform, which had always refused theaters to its series, and a reversal of its line: an episode designed as a movie, shown as a movie.

Why theaters
Three reasons. The runtime: more than two hours, the length of a feature film. The event: the end of a show started in 2016, that its creators wanted to see lived as a group, in the dark, like the 80s films that inspired it. And New Year's Eve: releasing the finale on December 31 turned the evening into an appointment, with a worldwide countdown and rooms full at midnight.

And in France
Nothing in theaters. The screenings were limited to North America, and the finale arrived in France on January 1, 2026 at 2 a.m., like every volume. Many fans organized their own New Year's Eve nights in front of the episode; some independent theaters had screened old episodes at events, never the new one.
European fansThe time difference made New Year's night an all-nighter for French fans: the midnight countdown, then two hours of waiting, then two hours of episode. The ending of the show was therefore discovered in the early morning of January 1.
What that changes
The screening relaunched the debate on the border between series and film. The Duffers said they had written Season 5 as a film in eight parts, and the finale is the clearest proof: structure, runtime, epilogue. It is also one of the arguments that shut down the idea of a separate movie: the movie was that last episode.

The figures of the evening
The last chapter was shown in 620 theaters in the United States and Canada, with screenings from the evening of December 31, 2025 and through the whole day of January 1, 2026. Even before opening, 1,1 million tickets had been sold. The evening's box office passed 25 million dollars.
A legal detail explains the form of these tickets. They were not sold as classic movie tickets but as confectionery vouchers, because of the actors' contracts: a theatrical release in the strict sense would have triggered pay clauses provided for cinema, and not for television. The receipts are therefore counted as confectionery sales, not as a box office.
The announcement had come late and contradicted earlier reports that the finale would not come out in theaters. Ross Duffer explained that the project had been in preparation for a year. It followed another theater night, the season premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, on November 6, 2025.
What the episode had of a movie
The choice of theaters was not only a marketing move. The chapter runs 128 minutes, more than an average feature, and it was designed as such. The whole season had been described by Maya Hawke, during the shoot, as “basically eight movies.” The last chapter has two separate climaxes, Henry's death then the explosion of the Upside Down, and an epilogue of nearly twenty minutes in the spring of 1989.
It was mixed for theaters as well. The sound mix of “The Rightside Up” was recognized by professional sound organizations, and the episode was shot with the same resources as the ones before it: 237 days on set for the season, a budget per episode estimated between 50 and 60 million dollars. Seeing the radio tower climb or the spider from the Abyss on a big screen was not absurd.
What it produced, and what it did not produce
The packed New Year's Eve theaters mainly produced one thing: a finale lived in common, in the dark, with room reactions, which had not happened to the show since the premiere screenings of the first seasons. Several outlets relayed videos of viewers applauding the axe scene or crying at the epilogue.
What the operation did not produce is a precedent. No spin-off movie was announced in the wake, and the platform recalled on its socials that no extra episode would follow, when the rumor of a chapter 9 swelled in early January. In France, the night played out at home, at 2 a.m. on January 1, with no movie screening.
A first for a show of this size
Series episodes have already been screened in theaters, often as a premiere or for a restricted audience. What distinguishes this case is the scale: 620 theaters, a screening simultaneous with the online release, and a distribution organized in a few weeks. For many North American viewers, it was the first time they saw an episode of the show on a screen larger than a television.
The operation was possible because the finale had been thought of as a film: two hours and eight minutes, a sound mix worked for the theater, and a three-act structure that can take a wide screen. The Duffers, who have never hidden wanting to move into film, found there a way to do it without leaving the show.
