Kali's death
Dr. Kay captures Max and Vickie. Akers's team storms the lab and threatens Kali to force Hopper to hand over Eleven. Murray destroys with a grenade the helicopter carrying the emitter that neutralizes Eleven's powers: freed, she snaps the soldiers' necks and forces Akers to shoot himself in the head. A stray bullet hits Kali, who dies. Eleven decides to face Henry directly, and makes Hopper promise to accept her choice.

The briefcase, and the spider
In Henry's mind, he pursues the children in the cave and has to relive his past; Holly leads the children into the mine and attacks him to buy time. Henry remembers: as a child, he opened a briefcase and was corrupted by a fragment of the Mind Flayer. Will begs him to destroy it; Henry refuses, and declares they are one. In the Abyss, his lair is revealed to be the very body of the Mind Flayer, which rises as a colossal spider and attacks. Eleven arrives and fights Henry inside the monster while Nancy draws him into position so the group can weaken him and kill him with fire and explosives. Will tears off Henry's arm, Eleven impales him, the children are freed, and Joyce cuts off his head with an axe.
Brenner's revealBrenner's notes, read through Volume 2, give the origin of everything: by forcing Eleven to contact Henry, he made her, without meaning to, the bridge between our world and the Abyss. The Upside Down was born there.
The bomb, and Eleven's choice
Hopper and Murray arm the bomb that is meant to destroy the Upside Down. Back in Hawkins, the group walks into an ambush by Dr. Kay, the transmitter on again. Then they all realize Eleven is not with them: she stayed behind, on purpose. In a last shared moment, in her mind, she says goodbye to Mike, asks him to thank the group, tells him she loves him, and to make the others understand her choice. The bomb goes off, the Upside Down is destroyed, the gates close, and Eleven seems to go with it.
The epilogue: the spring after
In spring 1989, the town is rebuilding, the army has withdrawn. Hopper pushes Mike, in mourning, to go to graduation. Dustin, valedictorian, pays tribute to Eddie Munson in a defiant speech. Steve, Robin, Nancy, and Jonathan meet at the radio station: odd jobs and school each on their own, the fear of drifting apart, the promise to stay in touch. Hopper and Joyce dine at Enzo's, he proposes, she accepts, and he suggests Montauk, where he is offered a better-paid police chief job.
After a Dungeons and Dragons game at the Wheelers', Max included, Mike predicts each one's future: Max and Lucas will finally go to the movies together, Dustin will do his studies without dropping his friends, Will will leave town and feel in his place for the first time, Mike will keep writing their adventures. Then he reasons: Eleven could not have vanished in the Upside Down while the army neutralized her powers; Kali, who did not die on the spot, must have projected a fake Eleven with her last strength, so that the real one could escape and live in peace, far away. The group chooses to believe it, puts away its binders, and Mike watches Holly and her friends start a new campaign before closing the door.

Behind the scenes: the last table-read
The last chapter is written and directed by the Duffer Brothers, their twentieth script for the show. The final table read of the script took place on September 8, 2024, in the presence of Shawn Levy and the whole cast: it was the first time the actors discovered the text, together, to live the ending at the same time.
Finn Wolfhard has said he feared an “Iron Throne” reception, the controversial Game of Thrones finale. On reading it, he knew “it was something special”. The Duffers, big Game of Thrones fans, said they wanted an ending without an excess of deaths, one that would leave the audience satisfied.
The play The First Shadow had suggested that something, in his father's lab, had pushed Henry Creel to accept his dark side. Matt Duffer had promised the finale would finally reveal “who the real evil is.” It is the second half of the mine memory, begun in “Escape From Camazotz,” that gives the answer: the briefcase.
What Mike predicts for each of them
After the last Dungeons & Dragons game at the Wheelers', Max finally at the table, Mike plays the seer. Max and Lucas will finally go to the movies together, as promised. Dustin will be a full-time student, but will come back to see his friends as soon as he can. Will will leave Hawkins and feel, for the first time in his life, in his place. Mike, for his part, will keep writing the group's adventures.
Then comes the theory that closes the show. Eleven could not vanish into the Upside Down while the army neutralized her powers. But Kali, wounded, did not bleed out at once: she was able to use her last strength to project a fake Eleven, and let the real one flee very far, live in peace. The group chooses to believe it. The show does not decide.
The other goodbyes are more sober. Dustin, valedictorian of his class, pays tribute to Eddie in a year-end speech. Steve, Robin, Nancy, and Jonathan meet at the radio station and promise to keep in touch. Hopper asks Joyce to marry him at Enzo's, and offers her Montauk, where he is offered a police-chief job.
