Episode 7: Max's waking
Max opens her eyes in Lucas's arms: it is he, she says, who was the anchor that brought her back. She did not see where Holly's portal led, but advised her to wait in the Upside Down Wheeler house. She warns: Henry is going to strike back. Holly, for her part, wakes in Henry's lair, in the Abyss, set into a wall with the other children; she flees across a desert, finds a crack in the ground and falls into the Upside Down. Nancy and Jonathan see her hanging in the air for a moment, before she is pulled back toward the sky.

The true nature of the Upside Down
Erica, Murray, and Mr. Clarke, with a makeshift device, locate Dustin in the Upside Down, and Eleven opens a gate to reunite everyone. Dustin then explains what he has understood from Brenner's notes: the Upside Down is a bridge between the real world and the Abyss, created without meaning to by Eleven when Brenner forced her to contact Henry. Will and Max add that Henry wants to merge the two worlds; Lucas notes the date, November 6, the anniversary of Will's disappearance: it will be that night.
At the base, Dr. Kay and Lieutenant Akers take in the damage of Henry's attack, listen to Sullivan, burned, talk about Vecna, and Kay repeats her priority: Eleven, at all costs. Akers finds a gate at the lab and wants to go back there.

What each one says before leaving
Steve and Dustin make up. Kali tells Eleven they will have to sacrifice themselves and stay in the Upside Down, so the army can never use them again. And Will gathers the group to come out: Henry used his secrets against him, and honesty is the only way to beat his fear. All of them stand with him.
Why “the bridge”The title has two meanings: the Upside Down itself, a bridge between our world and the Abyss, and the radio antenna, the bridge the party will take in the finale.
The departure
Erica and Mr. Clarke open the military base, and Murray drives Hopper, Eleven, Mike, Will, Joyce, Lucas, Dustin, Steve, Robin, Nancy, Jonathan, and Kali into the Upside Down. Max stays at the radio station with Vickie, under cover.
The last scene: Holly alone
In Henry's mind, he convinces the other children that Holly has been manipulated by Max. When Holly tries to warn them of his true nature, they refuse to believe her, Derek stays silent, and they force her to join them while Henry starts merging the worlds. Six days later, on December 31, the last episode answered the rest.

Behind the scenes: “the most moving chapter” before the finale
"The Bridge" is written by the Duffer brothers, their nineteenth script for the show, and co-directed with Shawn Levy. Ross Duffer presented it as "probably the most moving chapter of the season," the last episode aside. It closes the second volume, released December 25, 2025, and leaves a week of waiting before the December 31 finale.
Will's coming out had been planned since the first seasons. The Duffers had first thought of placing it in Season 4: the monologue where Will talks to Mike about the latter's feelings for Eleven was supposed to be the moment of the confession, with a subtext about his own feelings. They finally pushed the scene so it would serve as the high point of a path toward self-acceptance.
The first versions of the scene limited the confession to Joyce. It was rewritten so Will speaks in front of the whole group, because Vecna uses precisely his fear of rejection and of the secret. Noah Schnapp rehearsed the text for nearly a month; he described the scene as “liberating” and close to his own experience. The Duffers say they reworked it at length to “do right by Noah.”
The wormhole explained by Dustin
Ross Duffer confided that the Upside Down had been thought of as a wormhole since season 1, but that it was necessary, for the last season, to translate it into clear images. Shawn Levy noticed that Dustin's diagram closely resembled the internal documents the Duffers had used for years to explain the mythology to their crews.
The theory, as Dustin formulates it: when Brenner forced Eleven to make contact with Henry, she created the Upside Down without meaning to, a bridge between the real world and the Abyss where Henry was exiled. Will and Max add that Henry wants to merge the two worlds, and Lucas notes the date, November 6, the anniversary of Will's disappearance. Everything indicates he will act that night.
Steve's plan, Operation Magic Bean, turns that logic around: let Henry bring the worlds closer, climb the radio tower to the Abyss, attack him psychically with Eleven and free the children. Dustin adds the time bomb on the exotic matter, so the Abyss can never reconnect again.
