Who is Terry
In the 70s, Terry Ives is a student and a volunteer for an experiment program run by Dr. Brenner: drugs, sensory baths, perception tests. She is pregnant without knowing it. Her daughter is born, and the lab takes her from her by making her believe it was a miscarriage. Terry does not buy it. She files a lawsuit, loses, and ends up entering the lab with a gun to take her child back.

The loop
She gets as far as the room where her daughter is playing, glimpses her, and Brenner has her arrested. He subjects her to electroshocks that leave her frozen, mute, repeating the same words in a loop. Each word is a memory of that day: “breathe,” the sensory bath; “sunflower,” the flower on the desk; “rainbow,” her daughter's room; “three to the right, four to the left,” the combination of the vault where she takes the gun; “450,” the voltage of the electroshocks.

The reunion, 1984
Eleven finds her mother in Season 2, guided by Hopper who knew her name, at her aunt Becky's, who looks after her. Terry does not speak, but Eleven enters her mind and sees everything: the birth, the abduction, the gun, the electroshocks, and another child in the rainbow room, Kali. It is through her mother that Eleven learns she has a sister, and that is where her trip to Chicago begins.

What Terry says about Brenner
Terry is the oldest piece of evidence against Brenner: before the numbered children, before Henry, there was a student he drugged, whose child he stole and whom he destroyed for having looked for her. Season 4 shows him dying while protecting Eleven; Terry, in her armchair, recalls what it cost to get there.

Terry and Project MK-Ultra
Terry Ives is the most direct link between the show and real history. In the early 70s, she volunteers for a study at the Hawkins laboratory: drugs, sensory tanks, experiments on perception, under Martin Brenner's direction. The program is modeled on the CIA's MK-Ultra project, revealed in 1975, which really administered substances to volunteers and patients without their knowledge.
Terry is pregnant during the experiments, and her daughter is born at the laboratory. Brenner makes her believe in a miscarriage and keeps the child: that is Eleven, subject 011. Terry tries to take her back, enters the laboratory with a weapon, and Brenner subjects her to electroshocks that leave her in a vegetative state. Her sister Becky has looked after her since, in the family home.

Eleven, in 1984, enters her mother's mind and sees the scene replay: the hallway, the rainbow room, a little girl, another child, and the electroshock machine. That is how she learns of Kali, subject 008, and goes to look for her in Chicago.
What Terry gave Eleven
Terry never speaks to her daughter, and yet she passes on three things to her. A name, Jane, that Hopper will have put on a birth certificate. A sister, Kali, whose memory is buried in her loop and who will come back until the last season. And an explanation: Eleven was not born from an experiment on a child, but from an experiment on her mother, which makes her, unlike Henry, a victim of Brenner even before her birth.
Season 4 confirms that reading. In the Nina project bath, Eleven sees 1979 again and understands that Brenner raised her the way he had manipulated her mother: through conditional affection and lying. Terry is the first chapter of that story, and the only one Brenner never fully managed to silence: her loop finally spoke.
