Who is Jason
The perfect high school boy in March 1986: basketball team captain, a believer, popular, boyfriend of the cheer captain. He wins the championship the same night Chrissy dies, and the show films him first with sympathy: he loves her, and he loses her. What he does with that grief is the subject of the character.

The militia
Convinced that Eddie Munson killed Chrissy, and that the Hellfire Club is a satanic cult, Jason gathers his team and goes to hunt Eddie, then Dustin, Lucas and the others. He harangues the town at a public meeting, turns the residents' fear against the club, and makes Lucas, who plays on his team, a traitor to be taken down. The moral panic against Dungeons & Dragons, real in 80s America, found its face.

The ending
In the finale, Jason enters the Creel house during the piggyback, while Lucas watches over Max in a trance. He holds Lucas at gunpoint, demands he stop the music, and the two fight. At the moment the fourth gate opens and the earth splits in a cross, the rift crosses the room: Jason is cut in two. It is the most brutal death of the season, and the most discussed: some found it deserved, others too fast for a character who was only a boy in mourning.
Mason DyeJason's actor, born in 1994, defended his character: a boy who loved Chrissy and who grieved badly. He said the town-meeting scene was the hardest to play, because Jason believes every word of it.
Jason and Lucas
The season's real duel is between Jason and Lucas, basketball teammates: Lucas joined the team to be accepted, and Jason offers him that acceptance, until Lucas's loyalty to the group makes him the enemy. Their final fight in the Creel house is the price Lucas pays for having chosen his side.
Why the character matters
Because season 4 needed a villain without powers to say what fear does to a town: Vecna kills four people, Jason threatens dozens. He is the reminder that monsters are not the only ones choosing their victims.

Jason and the Satanic Panic
Jason is the face of a real episode in American history. In the 80s, parents, pastors, and journalists accused Dungeons & Dragons of pushing teenagers toward suicide and the occult; kids in metal T-shirts were treated as suspects, and trials were held on that basis. Jason's speech to the town council, in episode 7, picks up the arguments of the time almost word for word.
The show does not present him as a monster but as a boy in mourning whom the town agrees with. That is what makes the character unsettling: he does not need powers to do harm, a microphone and a shared fear are enough. His death, without glory, in the house where he thought he was unmasking a wizard, says what the show thinks of his crusade.
Lucas's choice
Jason is also Lucas's personal antagonist. By joining the basketball team, Lucas chose popularity; Jason offers him a place, on the condition that he betray his friends. For three episodes, Lucas plays a double game, follows the militia to slow it down, and ends up facing him, physically, in the Creel house, while Max is dying a few meters away.
That fight is the peak of Lucas's arc in the show. He does not win by force: it is the rift that kills Jason. But he has made his choice, and season 5 finds him at Max's bedside, never talking about basketball again.
What the show thinks of Jason
The Duffers wrote Jason as Eddie's inverted double: two high-school figures, the captain and the outcast, of whom the town keeps only the image. Jason has everything Eddie does not, popularity, a girlfriend, the adults' trust, and he uses it to name a culprit. Eddie has nothing, and he dies saving the town that is hunting him. The season plays that symmetry all the way: one dies in the Creel house, the other in the Upside Down, the same night.
Mason Dye played Jason without making him a caricature, which made the militia believable. The audience cried less at his death than at Eddie's, and that is exactly the intended effect: the show does not forgive Jason, but it explains where his anger comes from, as it had done for Billy.
