Who is Victor
In 1959, Victor Creel, a war veteran, moves in with his wife Virginia and their two children, Alice and Henry, into a large house in town. In a few weeks, the house goes wrong: lights, dead animals, visions. Then Virginia and Alice die, bones broken, eyes sunken, and Henry falls into a coma. Victor, the only conscious survivor, is accused, tried, and committed. He tears out his own eyes. He says a demon did this.

Pennhurst, 1986
Twenty-seven years later, Nancy and Robin, disguised as psychology students, get to see him in his asylum. He tells them everything: the haunting, the visions, and the radio he turned on to an old track to keep the evil at a distance. It is that detail that saves Max: music blocks Vecna. Victor does not know that the demon is his son, nor that that son is alive.

The music
It is the key of the season. In the haunted house of 1959, Victor discovered that a song on the radio silenced the visions; he did not understand why. The show explains it in 1986: a song tied to a memory opens a door in the trance. Thanks to Victor, Nancy and Robin understand, and Max runs on Kate Bush. A blind old man, in an asylum, saved a teenager he does not know.
Robert EnglundVictor's actor is the original Freddy Krueger, the one from “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Having the father of a monster who kills in the mind played by Freddy's actor is the show's most direct nod to its models. Englund shot his scene in one day, with lenses that left him blind.

"The First Shadow," the play performed in London and New York, tells the year 1959 from the inside: Victor, Virginia, Alice and Henry, the move, the haunting, and the murders. Victor is a man who tries to protect his family from an evil he does not understand, and the audience knows what he does not. He is the only season 4 character to have been given a whole play.
Why the character matters
Because Victor is Henry's first victim, the only one alive, and the one who gives the counter. And because he is the image of what the show says of adults: they were right, nobody believed them.

1959: what really happened in the Creel house
Victor Creel moves to Hawkins in March 1959 with his wife Virginia and their two children, Alice and Henry, in the big house in Roane County. Very quickly, strange things happen: dead animals, lights that blink, nightmares. Victor believes the house is haunted. The night of the drama, Virginia and Alice die in front of him, broken as Vecna's victims will be later; Henry falls into a coma.
Victor is accused of the massacre, tried, and committed to the Pennhurst asylum. Season 4 reveals the truth through Henry himself: it is he, at fourteen, who killed his mother and sister with his powers, after Virginia wanted him treated. He left his father alive, and guilty in everyone's eyes. Victor spent twenty-seven years in a cell for a crime committed by his son.
Pennhurst: the interview with Nancy and Robin
In March 1986, Nancy and Robin, dressed as psychology students, get an interview with Victor Creel. He tells them about 1959: the house, the visions, a “demon” that went after his family, and the song that saved him, “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” which he heard in his head at the moment of the attack. He later gouged out his eyes, in his cell, so as to see nothing more.
That scene gives the group the key of the season: music protects from Vecna's attacks. It is thanks to Victor that Max survives at the cemetery, with Kate Bush in her ears. Robert Englund, the Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street, plays the old man in a single sequence, eyes bandaged, and his monologue is one of the peaks of the season.
Victor and Henry: the father and the monster
The show never reunites the father and the son after 1959. Henry, become Vecna, only mentions his father to have spared him, and Victor does not know his son is alive. The last chapter of the show adds an element Victor never knew: the origin of the evil in Henry was not the house, but a briefcase, opened in a mine, even before they arrived in Hawkins.
The play The First Shadow, set in 1959, gives Victor a larger role than the show: you see the Creel family arrive in Hawkins, and a father who tries to understand his son. For anyone who has seen the show, the play watches like the trial Victor never had.
