Who is Robin Buckley?

Steve Harrington sells ice cream, in the summer of 1985, and his coworker keeps a board: on one side the girls he hits on at the counter, on the other those who refuse. The refusals column is the longest. Robin Buckley has no respect for the former high-school king, and she lets him know it constantly, with a torrent of words that nobody in Hawkins can follow.

She has been in the same class as Steve for years, but he has never noticed her: she played in the marching band, she speaks four languages, she reads books. She, on the other hand, had noticed him. She spent her history classes staring at a girl who was looking at him. She will say it only once, under truth serum.

What strikes you, watching her again from the start, is that she has no redemption arc, unlike Steve, and no founding trauma, unlike Nancy or Max. Robin arrives whole. The show does not fix her: it makes room for her, and that is all the character needed.

Robin is the smartest character on the show, and the most honest. She decodes what nobody understands, says what nobody dares, and refuses to lie about who she is. In three seasons, she goes from humiliating coworker to best friend, and from extra to heart of the group.

The bathroom confessionUnder truth serum, in the restroom of the Starcourt movie theater, Steve tells Robin he loves her. She answers that she is not interested in him, or in any boy: she is a lesbian. He goes quiet, then he laughs, then he teases her. It is the show's first coming-out scene, and one of the gentlest. It changes Steve for good.

The code. A Russian broadcast picked up by Dustin, a notebook, one night: Robin translates what the federal agents could not read.

1985Season 3: Scoops Ahoy

When Dustin picks up a Russian transmission, it is Robin who decodes it, in one night, from the mall's delivery schedule. With Steve, Dustin, and Erica, she goes down into the secret base under Starcourt, is captured, drugged, and interrogated. Under truth serum, she tells Steve she is a lesbian, and gains a best friend. She goes through the July 4 battle, and finds him a job beside her at Family Video.

1986Season 4: the Creel investigation

At the video store, Robin teams up with Nancy, whom she admires and exasperates in equal parts. Together they disguise themselves as students to question Victor Creel at Pennhurst asylum and discover the story of the haunted house of 1959. Sucked into the Upside Down at Lover's Lake, she faces the demobats, then throws the Molotov cocktails at Vecna in the Creel house with Nancy and Steve. At Hawkins High, she is in love with Vickie, a marching-band girl, and does not dare talk to her. The season ends on the start of a conversation, and on a town cut in two by the rift.

1987Season 5: Vickie

Eighteen months after the rift, Hawkins lives under military quarantine, and Robin is part of the hard core that organizes the incursions into the Upside Down in search of Henry Creel. She no longer has a counter or a video store: she has a role, and a party that counts on her. Under the quarantine, Robin is dating Vickie. Together they protect Max, in a coma, from the demodogs that invade the hospital, alongside Lucas. She goes through the final battle with the group, and the May 1989 epilogue shows her where she has always been since 1985: in the middle of the party, and finally happy.

What defines her

The languages

French, Spanish, Italian, and the Russian she decodes without speaking it. Robin understands what the others only hear.

The delivery

She talks faster than everyone, and says what she thinks at the same time. Steve takes a season to keep up, Nancy a week.

Honesty

She refuses to lie to Steve, to Nancy, to Vickie. Her coming out is not a plot twist, it is the rule of her character.

Steve

The most loved duo on the show: a former king of Hawkins High and a former band kid, who protect each other without ever saying so.

The detail nobody noticesRobin is the only character in the show to have decoded a state secret with a mall's opening hours. The federal agents investigating the Russians in 1985 have computers. She has a notebook, one night, and a racehorse: the phrase she was missing to understand that the message came from Hawkins.

Key moments

  1. The board of refusals

Behind the Scoops Ahoy counter, Robin keeps count of the girls who have turned Steve down. The first scene, and already the whole relationship.

  2. The decoding night

She translates the Russian word for word, down to the racehorse that makes her understand the message comes from here. Nobody sleeps.

  3. The movie-theater restroom

Under truth serum, she tells Steve who she is. He laughs. She laughs. The duo is born.

  4. Pennhurst asylum

Disguised as a student, she improvises a monologue so long and so convincing that the director gives in. Nancy looks at her, stunned.

  5. The hospital

With Vickie and Lucas, she defends Max asleep against the demodogs. Robin no longer runs, she protects.

Their ties

Person What he or she is to Robin The key moment
Steve Harrington The despised coworker who became his best friend The movie-theater restrooms, 1985
Nancy Wheeler The investigation partner she admires Pennhurst asylum, 1986
Vickie The girl from the band, the love of seasons 4 and 5 The first conversation, then the hospital
Dustin Henderson The kid who pulls her into the Russian base The 1985 decoding
Erica Sinclair The ten-year-old ally who crawls through the ducts Starcourt, July 4, 1985
Tammy Thompson The secret high-school crush, the one who used to watch Steve The 1985 confession

The Robin-Steve duo ended up surpassing, among fans, every couple on the show. The reason is simple: it is the only relationship in Stranger Things that owes nothing to desire. Two people who choose each other, with no hidden motive, and who prove it by going down together into a Russian base, a lake, and a haunted house.

Not to be confused

People often say In reality The landmark
Robin and Steve are a couple Best friends; Robin is a lesbian The 1985 confession
Robin appears as early as season 1 She arrives in season 3, in the summer of 1985 Scoops Ahoy
Robin ends up alone She is with Vickie in season 5 Hawkins hospital, 1987
Robin speaks Russian She decodes it without speaking it, from clues The notebook and the racehorse

A rarer confusion: Robin has never been Nancy's girlfriend, despite their season 4 duo and the theories that followed. They are investigation partners and friends. Robin is in love with Vickie, and the show confirms it in season 5.
