Lover's Lake in Stranger Things: the boat, the dive, and the gate of 1986
Universe · Hawkins · Lake
A boat, a lamp, a tear at the bottom. In this article: where the lake is, who is in the boat, the dive, the attack on the other side, what the gate changes, and why I do not invent a sequel for it. At the end, the water has an address.
Lover's Lake, the Lovers' Lake, is south of the town. In 1986, a boat stops there, Steve dives, and a rift swallows him.

The lake, to the south
Lover's Lake does not give itself away. The map of Hawkins, reconstructed from the routes, places Lover's Lake south of the town. The lab, for its part, is to the north, in the woods. Mixing up the two turns the map over.
The chapter that takes place there is called “The Dive”. It opens on the shore, where the previous one stopped: the police recovers a body, Patrick's, and questions Jason. The lake is already a place of death before it is a place of diving.
It is not a postcard pond one would cross in summer. It is night water, in March 1986, with a boat and a lamp. The south of the town, that night, no longer serves for swimming.

The boat
The plan is simple, and it is said as such in the chapter: check that the gate exists, and come back up. Steve takes off his t-shirt and goes down. Nancy, Robin, and Eddie wait in the boat. Nobody planned to change worlds. They planned a probe.
Eddie is there because the hunt pushed him toward this water, not because the lake has been his set forever. He will dive last, and reluctantly. The boat therefore holds four people, and only one volunteer to go down first.
The compass that led this far takes up an old method: a field strong enough bends the needle. The first gate, the lab's, had already thrown compasses off. The lake does not invent the tool. It puts it back in a hand, years later. The needle lies in the same way. Only the bottom has changed. The method, for its part, fits in a pocket, like the first time, without a new manual. What is new is the water, the night, and the fact that coming back up, the only plan that was set, fails, and the boat proves it by staying empty in the middle of the lake.
Steve's dive
Down below, Steve finds the rift. A red tear, open at the exact place where Patrick died. It looks solid, almost inert. He touches it, goes back up to announce it, and it is at the surface that a vine come out of the crack wraps around his leg.
He is pulled to the other side. The chapter title kept its promise, and the promise was a one-way trip. The Dive stops at the moment the other three jump after him. Nancy first, Robin next, Eddie last.
Patrick's death, in the chapter before, is what pierced this bottom. The lake does not choose a place at random. It opens where someone has already fallen.
On the other side
Steve surfaces in the water of the other world, and a swarm falls on him. The Demobats: bats with a petal mouth and a prehensile tail, the first flying beasts of this universe in this season. They squeeze his neck and bite him in the stomach and the side.
The rule is set almost in passing. They guard a territory rather than hunt far off, and they react to noise. The chapter does not make a manual. It makes an attack, in the water, on a boy who only wanted to come back up.
The three who jump do not get him out of the chapter. They enter with him. The boat stays above, empty. The Lovers' Lake has changed function: it is no longer a shore, it is a gate.
The water above and the water below are not the same. One still carries the boat. The other bites. The chapter offers no rescue plan. It offers the passage, and it cuts.

What the gate changes
Dustin nicknames this rift the Watergate. It is the third of the four gates opened by the murders, after the trailer and the road, and the only one under the water. The lake therefore becomes a point on the town's tear, not a swimming anecdote.
The dive has a double, set up in parallel: Eleven, elsewhere, in the desert tank. Two immersions, two truths under the surface, and both go wrong. The lake is not the only one swallowing someone that week. It is the only one to do it in front of a boat.
From there, part of the group no longer investigates from the shore. It has crossed. The geography of the story moves under the water, then to the other side of the water. The south of the town has just provided a third gate, after the trailer and the road, while the lab's gate has been closed since 1984.
The lake, afterward
The pages read for this article do not bring back a quiet scene on this shore. I therefore write no picnic, no commemoration, no closed lake that nobody filmed. The chapter leaves them on the other side. That is the last sure image.
What remains on this side is the nickname, the boat, and the place where Patrick fell. Three markers. They are enough to put Lover's Lake back in the south, far from the lab in the north, and to stop taking it for a pool.
The town has other waters. None, in these pages, redoes this dive. The Lovers' Lake keeps its own: one night, four people, a vine, wings.
One can place it again without a printed map. The south, not the north. A boat, not a municipal pool. A tear at the bottom, not a lap lane. Four markers, and the lake stops being a floating name. One knows where to set the boat, and that it does not come back.
