Amybeth McNulty, Anne Shirley before Vickie

Amybeth McNulty grows up in County Donegal, Ireland, of an Irish father and a Canadian mother, and starts in theater before being chosen, at fifteen, among nearly two thousand candidates to play Anne Shirley in Anne with an E, the adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. Three seasons, a Canadian award for best actress, and a fan community that asked, in vain, for a fourth season.

She joins season 4 of the show in 2021, in a short role: Vickie, Robin's band classmate, whom the character talks about even before you see her.

Vickie, from two scenes to a full role

In season 4, Vickie has a few minutes: a conversation with Robin at the disaster shelter, two girls who talk too fast and discover they have the same flaw. Season 5 finds her again as a couple with Robin, kept away from the secret, then pulled into the battle of Hawkins. Amybeth McNulty plays the only “normal” person in the group, the one who discovers the Upside Down through the worst of doors.

She has said she was a fan of the show before acting in it, and asked not to know the ending before filming her last scenes.

The conversation at the shelterThe Season 4 scene, partly improvised, was shot in one long day. Maya Hawke and Amybeth McNulty said they clicked immediately, which convinced the writers to give the couple a real place in Season 5.

Vickie, season by season

Season What Vickie lives through
4 Robin's crush; the conversation at the shelter
5 Together with Robin, kept at a distance, then in the battle; absent from the epilogue

What Vickie brings to the show

Vickie is the only important character introduced solely to be loved: she has neither mystery, nor power, nor secret. Her function is to give Robin, who spent three seasons talking so as to say nothing about herself, someone to lie to then someone to tell the truth to. Season 5 also makes her the ordinary viewer's gaze on the party: the one who first thinks Robin has lost her mind, and who then understands what Hawkins has been living for four years.

For the actress, it is a role against type after Anne Shirley: fewer words, more listening, and a love story told almost entirely in the gaps.

What you know less about her

Amybeth McNulty was born at Letterkenny hospital and grew up in Milford, a small town in north Donegal, an only child of an Irish father and a Canadian mother. Homeschooled, she trained in theater and classical dance at the Letterkenny youth theater. Her first roles date from 2014, on Irish television, then a science-fiction film, Morgan, in 2016, where she plays the title character at ten.

For Anne with an E, she had been chosen among 1 800 candidates, on an audition where she talked to trees, to flowers and built thrones out of branches. In June 2020, she came out as bisexual. In January 2026, she revealed that the show's audition was the last her parents had known about: her mother died in November 2021, her father in December 2023.

Vickie in 1987: the girlfriend who finds the Upside Down

Vickie opens the season in a secret couple with Robin, surprised by Will at the hospital, where Robin pretends they are "good friends." What follows makes her enter the story through the worst door: in episode 6, she confronts Robin about stolen medication, discovers the army's arrival, gets arrested, then escapes the Demodogs in the hospital laundry thanks to the dryer that Karen blows up.

In episode 7, she stays at the radio station with Max while the others enter the Upside Down; in the finale, both are captured by Dr. Kay's men. She does not appear in the 1989 epilogue, where Robin finds Steve, Nancy and Jonathan. Amybeth McNulty has said she was a fan of the show before acting in it.

What follows: Lucy Maud

In June 2026, Amybeth McNulty was announced as the lead of Lucy Maud, a biographical series devoted to Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables, alongside Megan Follows, the Anne of the 1985 adaptations and the following years. After playing the heroine, she will therefore play the one who invented her.

It is a choice consistent with her career: Irish and Canadian productions, roles of complex young women, and a link never broken with the character who made her known at fifteen.

Robin and Vickie: a story told in the gaps

The Robin and Vickie couple is one of the rare love stories on the show that does not go through a spectacular kiss scene or a breakup. Everything is in the gaps: Robin stammering at the video store in 1986, the conversation at the shelter where they discover they both talk too fast, then the kiss caught by Will at the hospital, in 1987, and Robin's formula, “good friends,” which fools nobody.

That discretion is a writing choice. Robin had spent three seasons talking so as to say nothing about herself; Vickie is the one she can finally tell the truth to, and that is what Robin explains to Will in the tunnels. Amybeth McNulty played the character without flash, which is exactly what the show asked of her.

TakeawayBorn in 2001 in Ireland, revealed by Anne with an E. Vickie, the band girl, in seasons 4 and 5. In a relationship with Robin in the last season. Theater and Irish productions between shoots.
