What is the Upside Down?
Eleven barely speaks, in November 1983, but she knows how to show. On the table in the Wheeler basement, she flips the Dungeons & Dragons board, sets Will's figure underneath, and the party understands: their friend is there, somewhere, in a place that is ours but upside down. The name comes from that gesture. Nobody will ever contest it.
The Upside Down is a copy of Hawkins, street by street, house by house. The difference is in the air: it is night all the time, it is cold, white spores float like a slow snow, and black vines cover everything, as if the town had been abandoned for centuries. You cannot breathe there for long. You find nothing to eat. And you are never alone.
What makes this dimension terrifying is its closeness. It is not elsewhere: it is here, superimposed, separated from us by a membrane the creatures tear at will. When Will makes the lamps in his house flicker, he is in the same room as his mother. He is simply on the other side.
Why November 6, 1983Nancy notices it in 1986: on the other side, her bedroom is the 1983 one, Eddie's trailer is not there yet, the posters are old. The Upside Down froze the day Will disappeared, the day Eleven opened the first gate from the lab. Season 5 gives the reason: that dimension did not always exist as it is, and it is Eleven's contact with Henry, in 1979, then with the creature in 1983, that shaped it.

The Upside Down season by season
1983Season 1: the discovery
Eleven, sent into the Void by Brenner, touches a creature, and the lab gate opens. Will is taken, Barb too. Nancy goes through a tree and comes back. Joyce and Hopper enter through the lab, in suits, and bring Will back. The group discovers the rules: the cold, the spores, the blood that draws, the membrane that closes.
1984Season 2: the tunnels
The dimension grows into ours: a network of vines digs tunnels under Hawkins, rots the pumpkins, and feeds a pack of demodogs. The shadow of the Mind Flayer, visible in the sky on the other side, possesses Will to see through his eyes. Eleven closes the lab gate, and everything that lived on this side collapses.
1985Season 3: the Russian key
A Soviet machine, under the Starcourt mall, tries to force the membrane. The fragment of the Mind Flayer left in Hawkins wakes and builds an army of flesh. Joyce destroys the machine on July 4. For the first time, the gate is closed before it could open wide.
1986Season 4: the four gates
Vecna opens a gate at each murder: Eddie's trailer, the road near the trailer park, Lover's Lake, the Creel house. Steve, Nancy, Robin, and Eddie go through the lake and discover that, on that side, Hawkins has stayed in 1983. When Max dies for a minute, the fourth portal opens, and the four gates join into a rift that cuts the town in two. The spores fall on Hawkins.
1987Season 5: the Abyss and the end
Hawkins under quarantine, creatures in the streets, and one more secret: beyond the Upside Down, a dimension the group calls the Abyss, where Henry Creel wants to reshape the world in his image with children as vessels. The show reveals the origin of everything there: Brenner, by forcing Eleven to contact Henry, created the Upside Down as we know it. In the last chapter, the group detonates a bomb near the exotic matter that holds the dimension. The Upside Down collapses. Eleven chooses to stay there.
The rules of the other world
A few rules, laid down over the seasons and never contradicted. Time does not pass: what happened after November 6, 1983 does not exist on the other side. Sound travels badly, but electricity does: Will makes the lamps blink, the radio crackles, the compasses go wild. Blood draws. Heat pushes back. And everything that lives there obeys a single will, which explains why a closed gate kills an entire pack.
The last rule is the most important: the Upside Down is not a hell, nor an afterlife. It is a dimension, with a physics, a biology, and a history. Season 5 takes it apart piece by piece, and that is what makes it possible to destroy it.
