Who is Heather Holloway
Heather Holloway works at the Hawkins pool during the summer of 1985. The show presents her as the lifeguard, the one who watches the pool, Billy Hargrove's coworker at the water's edge. She does not belong to the middle-school party. She has a summer job, parents, a house where people eat dinner. That ordinary life is what the possession takes first, after Billy.
Her name circulates mostly because she is missing. The third episode of Season 3 is called The Case of the Missing Lifeguard: the case of the missing lifeguard. Before she is a body inside a monster, she is an absence on the pool schedule. The town takes a while to understand that the absence is not a runaway.

The pool, then the house
Billy is already possessed when he comes up to her. The show shows him at the pool, at night, and Heather is the one he takes. The gesture is not a romance. It is the first visible recruitment after him: the coworker, taken at the workplace. Max Mayfield, who watches her stepbrother, will later see what this disappearance announces. Heather, for her part, does not get the sauna scene. That ordeal is Billy's, later, when the party tries to make him break.
From the pool, the story moves to the dinner. Billy then takes the parents, Tom and Janet, at their house. The order matters. First the lifeguard. Then the family table. The Season 3 monster grows through households like this one, not through an army that came from somewhere else. Heather is the proof that the neighborhood is enough.
Tom and Janet, not the other Tom
Tom and Janet Holloway are Heather's parents. They are taken at their dinner, possessed in turn, then melted. You have to set them apart from another Tom in the same season: the newspaper's editor in chief, the one who melts at the hospital with the reporter Bruce. Same first name, two men. The Holloways have no newsroom. They have a daughter who is a lifeguard and a meal.
The show does not give them a long biography. It gives them a home and a collective ending. Like the other possessed, whom the party calls the Flayed, they eat wrong, flee the heat, and end up no longer holding together in a separate body. The dinner is the last setting where you recognize them as a family.

Melted into the flesh monster
This summer's flesh monster is the body the Mind Flayer assembles from the possessed residents. Heather and her parents are part of it: possessed, then melted into the flesh monster. It is not a creature that arrived separately, with another name and another season. It is the same mass, fed on rats, then on neighbors, then on a lifeguard.
The melt is not a metaphor. The Season 3 monster shows bodies that give way, mix, and form a larger shape again. Heather does not come out of it. There is no scene where she is freed, and no separate coffin at the edge of the pool. When the mass attacks, on July 4, she is no longer someone you can call from the diving board.

What this death says about Billy
Billy Hargrove is the way in. As long as he is the only one possessed, the threat has a face Max knows. From Heather on, the threat has a method: take the people close to you at work, then the parents, then dozens of residents of Hawkins. The lifeguard serves to make the process visible before the crowd becomes impossible to read.
His own death, later, will weaken the creature, because he is the key to the recruitment. Heather does not get that way out. She is already in the mass. Mixing the two of them up would give the lifeguard the redemption of the last episode of Season 3. The show does not give it to her. She stays on the side of those who were taken, not on the side of the one who breaks the link at the end.
What is left of her
After the summer of 1985, Heather Holloway has no more scenes. No return, no letter, no pool reopened on her name. She remains a missing person from July, with Tom and Janet, in the tally of the possessed. The flesh monster does not give the faces back. That is the rule of that season, and that is why the lifeguard marks more than an extra at the pool.
You keep three images, and only three. The water's edge, with Billy. The dinner, with her parents. The melt, with no distinct face. The rest of the summer, the mall, the fair, the other songs from the pool, is told in the season's articles. Heather stops when the body no longer holds.
The music of Season 3 even lays a track over that pool at night: Rock This Town, by the Stray Cats, in the third episode, when Billy and Heather are at the pool. It is not a love song stuck on afterward. It is the last noisy setting before the abduction. The episode title says it outright, The Case of the Missing Lifeguard. The lifeguard is missing from the schedule. Only after that does Tom and Janet's dinner show that the method does not stop at work. You have to keep the calendar of summer 1985 in order. Late June, Heather and her parents are taken. Early July, the possessed melt and the matter joins the flesh monster, the body the Mind Flayer assembles. On July 4, the mass is already formed: it strikes elsewhere. Heather is no longer at the water's edge to see that. Billy, for his part, breaks the link later, by holding the creature back. That gesture is not hers. Neither is the sauna scene: it is an ordeal inflicted on Billy to see if he gives in. Heather has already given in, because she was not left a scene in which to resist.
Max Mayfield sees her stepbrother change, and Heather is one of the proofs that this change eats what is around him. The party will take a while to name the possessed. Heather, for her part, does not wait for the word. She goes from the pool to the dinner, then to the mass. Tom and Janet Holloway follow the same path, at the house, not at the newsroom: the other Tom, the one from the paper, melts elsewhere, with Bruce. Keeping the two first names distinct keeps you from giving the lifeguard a journalist father she does not have. After that summer, no one looks for her at the pool anymore. The flesh monster does not give the pool employees back one by one. The season's tally files them together, her and her parents, on the side of those who were taken. Billy has a later death, a visible one, at the moment he holds the creature back. Heather does not have that plan. She had the night, the episode title, and the melt.
