The Duffers directed more than half the show themselves, and systematically the first two and last two chapters of each season. Shawn Levy, executive producer from day one, took chapters 3 and 4 of the first four seasons, like a signature.
Why all the episodes are called "Chapter"
Each episode carries a chapter number followed by a title, “Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers,” like the chapters of a novel. That choice comes from the influence of Stephen King, whose cover typography inspired the title sequence, and from the Duffers' idea that each season is a book, or a long movie, rather than a string of episodes. The titles are announced in advance, often a year before release, and serve as clues: “Dear Billy,” “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab,” “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler.”
Some titles changed between the announcement and the release. For season 2, the Duffers had warned that the list unveiled in the renewal teaser contained provisional titles; for season 5, the title of the second chapter stayed deliberately truncated, “The Vanishing of...,” until broadcast, so as not to reveal Holly's abduction.
