Five seasons, forty-two chapters, a short path of about fifteen episodes if time is short. In this article: the rule of the path, then one season after another, from 1983 to the fall of 1987, the 128-minute finale, and the order to keep. By the end, you will know where to start without skipping a reveal.
An episode to watch, in Stranger Things, is not a "best moment": it is a chapter without which the rest no longer makes sense. The series has forty-two episodes and about forty-five hours. Here, season by season, are the ones that turn the story, and the ones you can set aside without getting lost.

This table is not a ranking of quality. A chapter missing from the right-hand column can be excellent and still necessary for the feeling. It is only less decisive for understanding who is who. If you have the forty-five hours, watch everything, in order. The short path is for when that is not the case.

The rule: a chapter that changes what comes next
A priority episode is a chapter whose ending changes what the characters know. Will vanishes, or he is believed dead, or Eleven finds him, or the gate closes, or a new entity takes the town. Without that information, the next chapter becomes a string of scenes whose stakes you do not know.
The temptation is to skip what feels slow. Openings often are: they set a town, a party, a routine, before breaking it. Skipping them saves an hour and loses the names of the places. Better to skip a middle you already understand than an opening or a finale.
The other temptation is absolute chronological order. The stage play and the animated series take place before some seasons, or beside them. They do not replace the pilot. You start with the series, in broadcast order. The rest comes after, for those who want the workshop and the side pieces.
The path proposed here fits in about fifteen chapters. It does not replace the forty-two. It lets you follow the story to the end, then come back to fill the gaps: the dance, the mall, the game club, the letters. These scenes are the salt of the series. Not all of them are required to know how it ends.
1983: four chapters out of eight
The first, "The Vanishing of Will Byers", sets everything: the game in the basement, the road at night, the lab, Eleven in a hospital gown. Without it, no name holds. It is the pilot, and it is also the chapter most often cited when people ask where to start. The answer is that one, not a summary.
The third, "Holly, Jolly", is the one with the wall of Christmas lights. Joyce talks to her son through the painted alphabet, and a body is pulled from the quarry. You think the story is over. It only changes shape. Going from episode 1 to episode 7 without this one means not understanding why the mother refuses the funeral.
The seventh, "The Bathtub", runs 41 minutes. It is the shortest of the series. Eleven, in a paddling pool, finds Will and confirms what happened to Barb. The group, until then split between the house, the station, and the high school, comes together. It is the chapter where the investigation becomes one story.
The eighth, "the Upside Down", closes 1983. The Demogorgon reaches the middle school, Eleven disappears, Will comes home and coughs up a slug. The next season starts from that image, not from the pilot. Chapters 2, 4, 5, and 6 tell the hunt, Nancy and Jonathan, the body at the morgue. They are good. They do not change the map if you are in a hurry. Come back to them.
1984: the drawing, the middle school, the dance
Season 2 has nine chapters. Three are enough for the mechanics, if you accept missing the detail.
The fourth, "Will the Wise", is the one where Will draws the tunnels and the adults understand that the child is no longer only a survivor. The Mind Flayer is not the Demogorgon of the year before: it is a presence that occupies Will, not a beast that opens a mouth in a living room. Without this chapter, what follows looks like a repeat of 1983.
The eighth, "the Mind Flayer", shows the thing above the middle school and the battle to get Will out. The ninth, "The Gate", closes the breach and ends at the Snow Ball. That is the end of 1984. Steve is already Dustin's ally, Max is in the party, Eleven has found the group again.
The seventh chapter, "The Lost Sister", is the most discussed of the season. It leaves town to follow Eleven and Kali. You can find it set apart. You should not throw it out: Kali comes back in the final season, and that hour is the only one where she was seen before. If time is truly short, note it and come back before starting 1987.

Summer 1985: the sauna, then Starcourt
The summer at the mall is the lightest of the five, until it is not. Eight chapters. Two carry the plot.
The fourth, "The Sauna Test", is the test. The group locks Billy in to check what he has become. The answer changes the summer: the enemy is no longer only under the town, he wears a high-school face, and he is not alone. The "Flayed" come from there.
The eighth, "The Battle of Starcourt", runs 77 minutes. The flesh monster, the base under the mall, Billy's death, Hopper believed lost, the American's message. Season 4 does not make sense if you still believe the sheriff simply left on vacation. Joyce leaves town with her sons. Eleven has lost her powers. Max has lost her stepbrother.
Between the two, the ice-cream parlor, Dustin's radio, Suzie and the song, the mayor, the Russians in the basement. That is the pleasure of this season, and it is also where Robin and Steve become a team. If you keep only the sauna and the battle, plan to come back: otherwise Robin arrives in the next season as a stranger.
March 1986: the club, the letter, the infiltration
Nine chapters, about thirteen hours, two volumes. It is the longest season. Three chapters hold the frame. Vecna is not the Mind Flayer, and he is not the Demogorgon: the fourth volume is there to learn his name, not to see the old beast again.
The first, "The Hellfire Club", sets up Eddie, the game club, and the curse that kills at the high school. Without this opening, the town's manhunt has no target. Eddie does not exist before this season, and he has no chapter in the later ones: everything known about him is here.
The fourth, "Dear Billy", is Max's letter and the tape. It is the chapter where you understand how the curse chooses, and how a song can break the trance. Skipping it means arriving at the finale without knowing why Lucas is holding Max's hand.
The ninth, "The Piggyback", runs 139 minutes. It is the longest chapter before the very last of the series. Four plans meet there: the Creel house, the desert, the Russian prison, the high-school field. Max stays in a coma. The breaches open over the town. Season 5 begins in that crater, not in a repaired everyday life.
Fall 1987: the first crawl, the sorcerer, the finale
Eight episodes, not nine. Three volumes: November 26, December 25, and December 31, 2025. The runtimes are 68, 54, 66, 83, 68, 75, 66, and 128 minutes. The short path keeps three of them.
The first, The Crawl, shows the town in quarantine and Hopper's plan to enter from the other side. It is the state of the world eighteen months after the breaches. Skipping it means not knowing who holds the radio, or why the teenagers no longer go to high school as before.
The fourth, Sorcerer, runs 83 minutes. Will becomes a sorcerer there. Until then, his link to the other side was a wound. From this chapter on, it is a power, and the finale rests on it. Eleven and he do not make the same gesture: she pushes, he acts through the link.
The eighth, The Rightside Up, runs 128 minutes. It is the chapter to watch even if you watch only one of this season, provided you have the two before it. Henry is impaled by Eleven and by Will, then Joyce beheads him with an axe. Kali, freed earlier, dies during the assault from a stray bullet. Eleven stays in the Upside Down: the ending leaves that door open. The epilogue takes place in May 1989. Hopper asks Joyce to marry him. Max wakes up. Nancy and Jonathan split. There is no ninth episode after that one.
What the short path leaves outChapters 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 of the final season carry Holly, the Turnbow trap, the radio, and the bridge. They are the body of the season. The short path gets you to the end. It does not tell you how Holly crosses Camazotz. Come back if the ending took you.

No. The final season stops at the eighth chapter, released on December 31, 2025.
In what order to watch the play and the animated series?
After the series, not before. The pilot stays the right place to start. The side pieces explain origins. They do not replace 1983.
