The thessalhydra in Stranger Things: the monster the game manages to defeat

Universe · The game · Christmas Eve

Spoiler warningThis article tells the end of the first season: the Christmas Eve game, and the slug Will shows to no one.
In brief

A game monster, defeated. In this article: where and when the thessalhydra appears, who casts the fireball, why it is not the beast of the woods, what the sink shows the same night, and what the story does not specify.

The thessalhydra does not leave the table. On Christmas Eve, in the basement, the game kills it. A fireball is enough. The beast from before had already gotten out.

The essentials

  • When: Christmas Eve, six weeks after Will's return
  • Where: the basement, in the Wheelers' house
  • The blow: a fireball cast by Will
  • What it is not: a creature of the woods, nor a relic

Markers

Moment What is on the table
November 6 a game that runs too long, a failed roll, a disappearance
Six weeks later Christmas Eve, another game
The move Will casts a fireball
The result the thessalhydra is defeated
The same night a slug, in the sink, and nobody is told

The table separates two games. The first is lost. The second is won. The monster you look for under this name is the one from the second: it dies in the game, and it stays there.

Christmas Eve, in the basement

The episode 8 of season 1 closes on a jump in time. Six weeks after Will's return, it is Christmas Eve. The group is in the basement. It wraps up a campaign. This is not an ellipsis you can stick onto Halloween. The story gives the holiday, and it gives the delay.

The room is the one in the Wheelers' house. A blanket fort is still standing in a corner. Mike looks at it. He does not take it down. The game is played beside a child's shelter left intact, as if the game had the right to start again where the fear had begun.

We do not describe a Christmas Eve dinner. No adults' table, no tree at the center of the scene. Christmas Eve, for them, is still a game. The monster of the day is called the thessalhydra. It is there because they put it on the table, not because a gate let it in.

That date matters for reading the whole month. In November, a game had ended badly. At Christmas, a game ends well. The story sets the two as mirrors. Winning, this time, is possible. That was not the case on the night of the disappearance.

The fort in the corner is not a hut outside. It is in the room, made of blankets, and nobody put it away for the holiday. Mike sees it while the game is ending. It is not the set of a fight. It is what remains of a children's game in a house that has already known November.

Will's fireball

They finish the thessalhydra thanks to a fireball cast by Will. The gesture is inside the game: a roll, a spell, a beast that falls. Will is not, in this scene, the boy being saved. He is the one who finishes the monster of the game.

We do not lend him a class title, nor a spell list, nor a die the story does not show. We know one thing: the fireball is his, and it is enough. The win is clean. Nobody misses the decisive roll, this time.

The contrast with November is the subject. On November 6, after ten hours of game, Will misses his roll. The same night, he disappears. The monster of that night, the Prince of Demons, does not stay a quiet figure. The thessalhydra, for its part, agrees to die when you strike it within the rules.

Mike runs the table, as he runs the games in this basement. The fireball is not his. Will is the one who casts it. The dungeon master then looks at the fort. Two gestures, two boys: one wins the fight that was announced, the other keeps his eyes on the shelter that has not moved.

It stays on the table

The thessalhydra does not enter the woods. It does not open a gate. It does not leave a body in a street. When the game ends, it is defeated, and the basement is still a basement. It is a monster the rules allow you to kill.

The Prince of Demons, at the start of the fall, had served to name a fear that, for its part, got out. They looked for him for real. You do not look for the thessalhydra in a field, nor in a trapped house. Nobody draws it on a wall to warn the town. It does not have that career.

That is why it matters. The story shows that not every beast in Dungeons & Dragons becomes a beast of the woods. Some stay figures. Winning one, on Christmas Eve, means taking back a game that November had broken. It does not mean closing the other world.

Mike, in front of the blanket fort, knows it well enough not to smile for too long. The game is won. The shelter is still there, useless and intact. The game has found a happy ending again. The house, around it, has not forgotten November.

The sink, the same night

The win does not hold to the end of the evening. In the middle of the meal, Will goes to the bathroom. He vomits a slug into the sink. For the length of a blink, the room tips to the dark side. He rinses his mouth, comes back to the table, and says nothing.

The slug is not the thessalhydra. One is a game monster, already dead within the rules. The other is a trace nobody invited onto the table. Putting them in the same bag means giving the game a guilt it does not have that night, and missing what Will hides.

The basement has just proved that you can win. The sink proves that winning a game is not enough. Will cast the fireball. He also has something in him that he does not show. The next season will only have to pull that thread. It is not a thread from a figure.

We do not name the slug any way other than the story names it here. No pack, no pet nickname. It is a slug, in a sink, on Christmas Eve, after a game that was won. The order is all the information.

What the story does not specify

The story does not give the thessalhydra's size, nor a number of heads, nor a lair, nor a page from a manual. It gives a name, a fireball, a win, a basement. Adding the rest means writing another game, the one from a book this scene does not set on the table.

We do not bring it back later under another sky either. It has no next season. The fears after will have other names, other bodies, other places. Looking for the thessalhydra in a mall or at Hawkins High means taking it out of a night that already killed it.

It is not the Prince of Demons, and it is not the beast that took Will in November. It is the beast the group has the right to defeat, precisely because it did not get out. That is good news from the game. It is not good news about the sink.

Three facts, and we stop. Christmas Eve. A fireball from Will. A beast already defeated on the table. The blanket fort is still there. The slug is too. The rest would be a sheet invented to look complete.

The scene does not hand out the roles one by one either. We know who casts the spell. We know who looks at the fort. The group is around the table without a line giving each one a class, a weapon, or a victory sentence. Filling that sheet would mean writing a longer game than the one the story filmed.

Not an inventoryIf a sentence gives hit points, a number of heads, or a shop where you buy the exact figure, it leaves the scene. The scene says: they win, and that is not enough.

An object from the game club, for a beast that does not leave the table.

To rememberThe thessalhydra is a game monster, on Christmas Eve, six weeks after Will's return. Will finishes it with a fireball. It stays on the table. It is not the November beast, the one from the failed roll and the disappearance. The same night, Will hides a slug. Winning the game is not enough.

Frequently asked questions

The monster of a game, on Christmas Eve, in the basement. The group defeats it. It does not go out into the woods.

Who kills it in the game?

Is it the same monster as in November?

No. In November, Will misses a roll and disappears. The thessalhydra, for its part, is defeated within the rules, six weeks later.

Where is the game played?

In the Wheelers' house, in the basement. A blanket fort is still standing in a corner.

Why does the sink matter?

The same night, Will vomits a slug there and does not talk about it. It is not the beast of the game.

Does it come back later?

No. This scene kills it in the game, and the story gives it no follow-up off the table.
